Net Zero Retrofit

Solar PV

Solar panels are a fantastic way of generating electricity for use in your home. The panels will work year round but are obviously more effective in the Spring and Summer months, or when there is little cloud cover.

The panels work as soon as they are installed, but you may wish to notify your energy provider about the install, as you are able to claim a ‘Smart Export Guarantee’ for any energy you do not use. This energy is exported back to the national grid.

Benefits of Solar PV

Renewable and sustainable energy – Solar PV harnesses sunlight, an abundant and renewable energy source. As long as the sun continues to shine, solar energy can be tapped, making it a sustainable solution for the future.

Reduced electricity bills – By generating your electricity from solar panels, you can significantly lower your dependence on electricity from the grid. This can lead to substantial savings on your energy bills over time.

Environmentally friendly – Solar PV is a clean energy source, producing no harmful emissions or greenhouse gases during operation. By choosing solar, you help combat climate change and reduce your carbon footprint.

Low operating and maintenance costs – Once installed, Solar PV systems have minimal operating costs. Routine maintenance is relatively simple and typically involves cleaning the panels to ensure optimal performance.

Installation Information

As part of your install, we will have to erect scaffolding. We will let you know when this is being done, usually giving you one weeks notice.

Please ensure that there are no personal belongings left near to or up against external walls.

We will also need access to your loft space to install the solar inverter and cabling. We will then install a walkway in your loft so the PV instruments can be accessed for maintenance. We will also install a smoke alarm in the loft space, please ensure that the loft is accessible and clear of personal belongings.

Monitor performance – Keep an eye on your energy usage and production through the monitoring system provided. Any sudden drops in output could indicate a need for inspection. If there is any damage to the panels or cabling, please report this as this could reduce the efficiency of the panels.

Check PV modules – For any signs of aging, including rodent damage, climate aging, connector tightness, corrosion or grounding condition. Check if any sharp objects are in contact with the PV modules surface.

Cleaning – Solar panels require very little maintenance, but periodic cleaning is recommended, especially if you live in an area prone to dust or bird droppings. Use water and a soft brush to clean, or use a professional cleaning service. This will help to prolong the lifespan of the panels.

Inverter check – The inverter is the most critical part of your Solar PV system. Keep an eye on any fault messages. If anything seems unusual, please contact us for assistance.

Faults – Should you have any issues, please do not attempt to ‘repair’ the panel yourself. Please report it to your landlord so they can arrange for an inspection. Do not apply paint near the panels as this can affect them working.

Shading – Check for any new sources of shade that could reduce your systems efficiency, such as overgrown trees or nearby construction.

Smart export guarantee – Get paid for the energy you give back to National Grid.
